Cities - People - Places

3rd International Conference on Cities, People and Places (ICCPP-2015)

‘Towards a New Urbanity; Places for Urban Coherence’

October 26-28, 2015, Colombo, Sri Lanka

The Department of Architecture of the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in collaboration with its international and national academic partners is proud to announce the third International Conference on Cities, People & Places, to be held from October 26 to 28, 2015, at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Since the time of the first European Urban Charter adopted by the congress of local and regional authorities of the Council of Europe in 1992, our societies, culture and economies have undergone dramatic change. In view of these, European Urban Charter 2-Manifesto for New Urbanity adopted in 2008 proposes a new approach to urban living to enable the inhabitants of modern towns and cities to meet the contemporary challenges. In this context, the conceptions of the city itself have changed significantly during the recent years. However, the contemporary challenges posed by the character and nature of major infrastructural, residential, commercial and manufacturing developments of the modern world are hugely intricate and extremely difficult to deal with. In fact, the dialectics between the desire to restore the urban forms of the wholesome organic city and the incoherent reality of the actual city are almost irreconcilable. Given this situation, urban researchers and practices have to interrogate these contradictions and question whether the reality of the incoherence of cities is to be accepted as the inevitable amalgam of fragments, unless we can do otherwise.
