Michael Jansen




Michael Jansen is Professor and honorary professor for Conservation and Heritage Management GUTech, Muscat. He is the founder of the German University of Technology, Muscat and former Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, RWTH. Also, he is the President of Research Center Indian Ocean (RIO), at GUTech, Muscat, Oman since 2012 and elected Vice- Rector of Aachen University RWTH from 1996-99 and elected German president of the Deutsch Pakistanisches Forum, Berlin in 2019.

He recently received one of the highest national awards as the founder of German University of Technology, Muscat and the second highest civilian award, Crescent of Distinction Medal, the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, in recognition of his service to the Archaeological discovery of the Indus Valley Civilization on the occasion of the Pakistan National Day in Islamabad in 2019. Already in 1987 Prof. Jansen had been decorated with the star of distinction (Sitara e Imtiaz), the third highest honor and civilian award of the State of Pakistan. Also, he joins the exclusive group of persons with two national awards and only one in the field of the Indus Valley which bears testimony to his lifelong, passionate services to Mohenji Daro, the jewel of the third millennium Indus Valley Civilization.

He has extensive experience in Conservation and Urban History and has devoted his practice for rage of conservation projects over 3 years. Prof. Jansen has been consulting several ancient city conservation projects such as Mohenjo-Daro Pakistan Otrar, Kasakhstan Krasnaja Rechka, Kirgistan Bamiyan Valley, Afghanistan, Design, management and execution of the Cultural project ´Archaeological park ´al Balid´, Dhofar, Sultanate of Oman, H.E. Abdul Aziz al Rowas and Placing of the ´Land of Frankincense´ on the UNESCO World Heritage list as a senior UNESCO consultant.

Prof. Jansen is a frequent invited speaker on ICOMOS workshop ‘Post Trauma’ UNESCO, Paris and invited member of The Indian Ocean and Islamic Cultures’ Aga Khan University, London.

Currently, he is appointed as Advisor to Culture for UNESCO by Minister Culture Government of Kasakhstan, Two advisory missions to Turkistan, Khoja Admed Yasavi monument (Timurid) World Heritage List and Official delegate to UNESCO World Heritage Committee Baku for Kasakhstan

Prof. Dr. Jansen is the Organizer of workshop Sacred Architecture and Tourism, ICOMOS, Aachen Cathedral celebration 40 years World Heritage jubilee and International workshop on ‘Ports and Transports in the Indian Ocean’ together with Max Planck Institute Halle and Sindh University Pakistan.

Since he has copyright to over 200 publications his current research interests include city conservation, Ancient civilizations, urban conservation, and heritage management and culture studies.
